Below is information about the amazing work that EMAS do as well as some example of the amazing support they give so that you also can become involved.

EMAS - Ethnic Minority Achievement Service

We are proud to have EMAS based at Fairlight. EMAS supports pupils who have English as an additional language in schools across Brighton & Hove. EMAS is a team of specialist teachers, teaching assistants, bilingual liaison workers and home school liaison workers.
We work with pre-school, primary and secondary aged children, in their own schools.

Getting support from EMAS

Every private, voluntary and independent pre school and nursery can refer to EMAS. Bilingual support is available for 2, 3 and 4-year-old children who have a funded place.

Usually schools refer pupils to EMAS. Sometimes EMAS home school liaison or bilingual liaison workers will refer a child. Other professionals like health visitors and speech and language therapists also refer children to EMAS.

Parents and carers are welcome to contact us if they have any questions.

Helping Your Bilingual Child Learn in Reception

This presentation was shared by EMAS specialist teaching assistants at EMAS parent meetings.

It gives information about what children learn in reception and some ideas for supporting their child at home.

The presentation gives reassuring information to bilingual families about the cognitive advantages of being bilingual and the importance of a  child’s home language/s and how its continued development supports their brain development.
