Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is Damien Jordan (Headteacher).
Assistant Designated Safeguarding Lead (ADSL) are Shereen Avard (SENCO) and Julianna Ashworth (Attendance Lead).
Designated Safeguarding Governor is Glenn Ferris.
Safeguarding STATEMENT
At Fairlight Primary and Nursery School, we strive to be a place where pupils, staff, helpers, families and other visitors will be made welcome and comfortable and where we will treat each other with respect.
We believe that all children and young people have the right to protection from neglect and abuse and that their welfare is of paramount importance.
Fairlight Primary and Nursery School is a place where learning and personal development takes place in a climate of trust and confidence and where we value everyone's unique contribution to our community.
Everyone has a responsibility for Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and for ensuring they are protected from harm.
All staff and volunteers working in the school have a duty to ensure that children are safe and protected. We all have a duty to ensure that if there are any concerns relating to the welfare or safety of a child, the pan-Sussex child protection procedures are followed.
We will always try to work in partnership with families. However if there is any conflict between the needs of the child or young person and those of parents/carers or professionals, the needs of the young person will always come first.
The school has a Safeguarding Policy that is reviewed regularly.
We also do a yearly audit around Safeguarding along with the Local Authority to review our procedure and practice.
One of our Governors has a Designated role around Safeguarding.

Safeguarding children and child protection
All organisations that work with or come into contact with children should have safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure that every child, regardless of their age, disability, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, has a right to equal protection from harm.
Setting up and following good safeguarding policies and procedures means children are safe from adults and other children who might pose a risk. This includes voluntary and community organisations, faith groups, private sector providers, as well as schools, hospitals and sports clubs.
What is safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the action that is taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.
Safeguarding means:
- protecting children from abuse and maltreatment
- preventing harm to children’s health or development
- ensuring children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care
- taking action to enable all children and young people to have the best outcomes.
Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children identified as suffering or likely to suffer significant harm. This includes child protection procedures which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.
WHAT DOES THIS ACTUALLY MEAN IN REALITY AT FAIRLIGHT?
At any one time we are supporting and working with a number of families who are also working with and being supported by Social Services and social workers.
Our role mainly focusses on the children and in school.
WHAT DOES THIS SUPPORT LOOK LIKE?
The DSL or ADSL attend social service meetings such as Child Protection Conferences or Core Groups.
They complete reports required for these meetings.
Liaise with other outside agencies involved in supporting the children and families.
Undertake welfare checks on the children.
